In a major crackdown on illegal imports, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has confiscated approximately 10,000 kilograms of firecrackers valued at nearly Rs 3 crore from the Nhava Sheva port in Maharashtra. The seizure, carried out following specific intelligence inputs, is being viewed as one of the significant anti-smuggling operations conducted at the port in recent months.
According to officials, the consignment was intercepted after agency sleuths received a tip-off about the illicit shipment of pyrotechnic materials being routed through the port, one of India’s busiest container terminals. Acting swiftly, DRI teams conducted a thorough inspection of the cargo, which led to the discovery of the large stockpile of firecrackers concealed within the shipment.
Officials noted that the import of firecrackers is subject to stringent regulations in India, given the safety hazards associated with their transportation and storage. Any consignment found violating these norms is liable for seizure and legal action against those involved.
The DRI has initiated further investigation to trace the individuals and entities responsible for attempting to bring in the banned or unauthorised consignment. Officials indicated that efforts are underway to identify the importers, examine documentation related to the shipment, and ascertain whether the firecrackers were meant for domestic distribution ahead of the festive season.
This seizure comes amid heightened vigilance by customs and revenue intelligence agencies across Indian ports, particularly during periods leading up to major festivals when the demand for such items typically spikes. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to curbing smuggling activities and ensuring that only compliant and safety-approved goods enter the domestic market.
The DRI has urged the public and trade bodies to report any suspicious activity related to the illegal movement of goods, emphasising that such operations pose serious risks to public safety and economic security. Further details regarding the case, including potential arrests, are awaited as the investigation progresses.
