The Technology Development Board (TDB), operating under the Department of Science and Technology, has approved financial assistance worth Rs 285 crore for UBFly Technologies, a move aimed at strengthening India’s ambitions in next-generation air transport systems.
The funding, extended under TDB’s research, development and innovation support mechanism, is expected to give a significant push to indigenous efforts in advanced aerial mobility solutions, including technologies associated with electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) systems and other futuristic air transport platforms.
Officials associated with the initiative said the collaboration reflects the government’s broader vision of positioning India as a serious player in the emerging global air mobility sector, which is witnessing rapid technological advancements across countries investing in urban air transport, cargo drones and passenger-carrying aerial vehicles.
UBFly Technologies, which has been working on developing indigenous aerial mobility solutions, is expected to utilise the funding to accelerate research, build prototypes, and move towards commercial-scale deployment of next-generation air transport technology suited to Indian conditions.
The Technology Development Board has, over the years, played a crucial role in bridging the gap between laboratory-stage innovation and market-ready products by providing financial support to companies working on technologies of national importance. Officials noted that this latest investment falls in line with the Board’s mandate to encourage indigenous innovation in strategically significant and futuristic technology domains.
The development comes amid growing global interest in air mobility as a solution to urban congestion and last-mile connectivity challenges. Several countries have been investing heavily in eVTOL and drone-based transport ecosystems, and India’s push through initiatives like this funding support is seen as an attempt to remain competitive in this evolving space.
Experts believe that if successfully executed, projects like the one being backed by TDB could pave the way for India to develop its own ecosystem of air taxis, cargo drones and other innovative transport solutions, reducing dependency on imported technology while creating new avenues for skilled employment and industrial growth.
The partnership between TDB and UBFly Technologies is being viewed as part of a larger strategy to encourage private sector participation in cutting-edge technology development, with the government providing the necessary financial backbone to support high-risk, high-reward innovation in sectors critical to the country’s future infrastructure and mobility needs.
Further details regarding the project timeline, technological milestones and eventual deployment plans are expected to be shared as the initiative progresses.
