Defence Ministry Signs ₹811 Crore Deal with BDL for 160 Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons for IAF

In a significant push to India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing, the Ministry of Defence has inked a contract worth ₹811 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the supply of 160 indigenously developed Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAAWs) to the Indian Air Force.

The agreement, signed between senior officials of the Ministry of Defence and BDL, marks another milestone in the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to reduce dependency on foreign defence equipment and strengthen domestic production capabilities.

The Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon is a precision-guided munition designed to neutralise critical enemy infrastructure such as runways, hangars, radar installations, and other airfield assets during military operations. Developed with indigenous technology, the weapon system is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Air Force’s offensive capabilities while minimising reliance on imported armaments.

Officials from the Ministry of Defence stated that the induction of these weapons will bolster the IAF’s operational readiness and provide a strategic edge in modern warfare scenarios, particularly in neutralising adversarial air defence infrastructure swiftly and effectively.

Bharat Dynamics Limited, a Navratna defence public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has been at the forefront of manufacturing missile systems and allied defence equipment for the Indian armed forces. The company’s involvement in this project underscores the growing role of public sector defence enterprises in delivering advanced weaponry through indigenous research and development.

Defence officials noted that this contract not only strengthens the country’s military preparedness but also generates employment opportunities and fosters technological growth within India’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The deal is part of a broader series of measures undertaken by the government over recent years to boost indigenous defence production, reduce import dependency, and position India as a credible player in the global defence manufacturing landscape.

With this contract, the Ministry of Defence has reaffirmed its commitment to equipping the armed forces with cutting-edge, homegrown technology while simultaneously advancing the vision of a self-reliant India in the critical defence sector.
